What Should A Border Collie Look Like

The Border Collie is a highly intelligent and energetic breed known for its exceptional herding abilities. When it comes to appearance, certain characteristics define the ideal look of a Border Collie.

General Appearance

A Border Collie should have a well-balanced body, exhibiting grace and agility. The overall impression should be one of a dog ready for action, possessing the ability to change direction quickly and effortlessly.

Size and Proportions

Border Collies are medium-sized dogs with a height ranging from 18 to 22 inches at the shoulder. They should have a proportionate body, slightly longer than their height, giving them a rectangular outline.

Head and Expression

The head of a Border Collie is one of its most striking features. It should be in proportion to the body, with a moderately wide skull and a well-defined stop. The eyes are oval-shaped, set well apart, and have an intelligent and alert expression.

Coat and Color

Border Collies have a double coat consisting of a dense, weather-resistant outer coat and a soft undercoat. The coat can be either smooth or rough. The acceptable coat colors include black, black and white, tri-color, merle, and sable, with or without white markings.

The tail of a Border Collie should be set low, reaching at least to the hock joint. It should be carried low and never curled over the back. The tail is an extension of the spine, and its length and shape contribute to the overall balance of the dog.

Border Collies are known for their agile and effortless movement. They have a ground-covering stride, with the front and rear legs moving in parallel. When viewed from the side, their movement is smooth and effortless.

In summary, a well-bred Border Collie should possess a well-balanced body, a moderately wide head with an intelligent expression, and a coat that is either smooth or rough. The dog should exhibit agile and effortless movement, contributing to its overall grace and agility. Remember, while appearance is important, the true value of a Border Collie lies in its intelligence, work ethic, and ability to excel in various activities and sports.
